THE HISTORY OF BELLA VERDE
The Montebello Golf Course's origins date back to the 1920s when the burgeoning demand for golf in Southern California led to the development of several new courses. The course was originally part of a small country club designed primarily for the local community. Over the years, the course has seen numerous changes and redesigns, evolving to meet the standards of modern golf while retaining its historic charm.
Montebello Golf Course has hosted several notable tournaments over the years, attracting both amateur and professional golfers. One of the most prestigious events held at Montebello is the annual Montebello Open, a regional tournament that drew competitors from across Southern California. The Open was known for its competitive spirit and had been a stepping stone for many golfers who went on to achieve greater success in larger national and international competitions.
In addition to the Montebello Open, the course has also been a regular venue for charity golf tournaments, high school league matches, and corporate events. These events have not only helped to raise funds for various causes but have also played a crucial role in maintaining the course’s reputation as a community-centric venue.
In 1998-99, the 18-hole, 120-acre championship layout underwent a remodel by architects David A. Rainville, ASGCA, and Gary Bye that included all new greens, tees, bunkers, and cart paths, as well as the addition of 3 lakes. Over the years, Montebello Golf Course has also been a pioneer in promoting environmental sustainability within the golfing community. Efforts have been made to conserve water, reduce chemical use, and preserve the natural habitats on and around the course.
On September 14, 2022, the Montebello City Council unanimously voted to fund the Montebello Golf Course Improvement Project, to enhance the design, architecture, and functionality of the current golf course. The project will re-invent over 72 acres of the existing public golf course and expand its hours of operation.
Today, Montebello Golf Course, rebranded as Bella Verde Golf Club and part of the Bella Verde Resort and Golf Club property, offers its dedicated guests a wide range of options. The Montebello 9 Course is a regulation-length, tree-lined layout with white sand bunkers and pristine conditions. The new signature Par 3 course offering 9 holes of Par 3’s (6 holes during the day and 9 holes of lit golf in the evenings). Next door to the course is a new TopGolf facility offering climate-controlled hitting bays for year-round comfort with HDTVs in every bay.
